After Midnight

I stepped into the living room around midnight, tossed my keys on the little table by the door and peeled off my tight jeans. Once the jeans were beside me in a crumpled pile on the floor I let out a big sigh of relief. “That’s so much better.”

“Not for me.”

I shrieked and turned around. Granny was sitting in her chair, reading a poker book and petting Fluffy. “Would you mind putting on some pajama pants or something? Fluffy is an impressionable cat.”

I hurried into the bedroom to find pants and called out to Granny through the open door. “I thought you were going to be out playing poker until the sun came up.”

“The casino was dead. Came back home to study probabilities and brush up on my Omaha high/low theory. I won’t bore you with the details but that game is going to make me rich. Tourists just don’t know the ins and outs the way I do.”

I found a pair of pajama pants covered in cute little polar bears and pulled them on. Then I grabbed an old Toluca Lake High School T-shirt, threw it on and shuffled back out to the living room. “Those poor tourists. I bet they never suspect a card shark to be hiding in a Granny like you.”

Granny turned the page and didn’t look up. “Yup. That’s my secret weapon. One of my many secret weapons.” I flopped down on the couch beside Granny’s chair and put my feet up on her armrest.

Granny nudged my feet away. “Get those stinky things away from me.”

I wiggled my toes. “Granny. My toes are beautiful, not stinky.”

Granny shoved my feet away once more, that time with a laugh. “Remove your feet, or I will remove them for you.”

I giggled and sat up. “So do you want to know what happened at the bar or not?”

“I was waiting for you to spill.”

“You could have asked, you know,” I said. “Besides, before I had a chance to say anything, you made me put on pants.”

“Pants are a requirement in this home. While you’re living under my roof, you’re keeping your underwear under there.” Granny gestured to my pants area. “Once you’re gone, who knows what the rules will be. Probably I’ll be No-pants Petunia.”

Over the next few minutes, I told Granny all about what Betsy and I had experienced at the bar. Granny was shocked to hear the place didn’t have a bouncer and she seemed disappointed that her knowledge of nightlife had fallen over the years. She asked if the bar had been crowded. I confirmed that there had been lots of people there but I didn’t mention Officer Handsome, I mean, Mike. Granny and I needed to figure out the next step in our investigation and I wasn’t in the mood to discuss my nonexistent love life any further. Then I got to the part of the story where the bartender caught me trying to enter the back office. Granny scooted to the edge of her seat and widened her eyes.
